"The DATSD(NM) oversees and develops the plans for nuclear weapons safety, security, and survivability, as well as the survivability of material and systems relative to nuclear effects. The ODATSD(NM) has responsibilities in each of the following functional areas: Nuclear Weapons Council (NWC) and Committee of Principals (CoP) support, Stockpile and Transformation, Nuclear Surety, Nuclear Survivability and Weapons of Mass Destruction, International Programs, Nuclear Matters Staff Support, and maintaining nuclear expertise. In addition, the ODATSD(NM) also fulfills other general nuclear responsibilities such as developing Congressional testimony, advising on arms control and treaty issues, participating in budgeting and planning activities.
Since 1995, the DATSD(NM) has been delegated direct supervisory responsibility for the NWC staff. The Deputy for Nuclear Matters serves as the advisor and focal point for physical security equipment issues on nuclear weapons security and for processing nuclear weapons system safety rules packages. The DATSD(NM) also serves as the OSD principal point of contact for nuclear weapons with other DoD Components, the NNSA, the State Department, the NWC, and other government agencies."
